Used-car or warranty dispute

Sales contract and the Buyers Guide, if the vehicle was bought from a dealer.
Written warranty or service contract, including coverage and exclusions.
Delivery date and mileage; dates and mileage when each problem appeared.
Repair orders, diagnoses, invoices, and dates the vehicle was unavailable.
Your written repair request and the dealer or warranty provider’s response.

Identify who promised the coverage and the reason given for refusing it. Check the notice and repair procedure in your state guide and paperwork before choosing a remedy.

Loss of value after repairs

Accident date, state, and the insurer’s claim reference.
Repair estimate, final invoice, and photographs of the damage and repairs.
Vehicle year, model, trim, mileage, and pre-accident condition.
The insurer’s valuation or written explanation of its offer.
Comparable vehicle evidence or an appraisal, if you have one.

Separate the cost of repairs from a possible loss of resale value. Review whether this type of claim applies before paying for an appraisal; a calculator is not proof of your vehicle’s market loss.

Total-loss valuation dispute

The insurer’s complete valuation report and itemized settlement offer.
Your vehicle’s trim, options, mileage, and condition before the loss.
Comparable listings with dates, prices, mileage, and location.
Receipts or other records supporting corrections to the report.
Your policy, deductible, and the insurer’s written response to disputed items.

Look for specific errors in the report before proposing a different value. Keep valuation, loan balance, and any GAP coverage questions separate.

Accident or injury claim

Accident date, location, and any police-report reference.
Photographs, witness contact details, and insurance correspondence.
Repair estimates and other documented property expenses.
Relevant treatment records, bills, and records of missed work, if applicable.
Any settlement offer, release, or deadline notice you have received.

Keep your documents together and use the state guides to identify the relevant process. For injury, disputed responsibility, or an approaching deadline, contact a licensed attorney directly before signing a release.

Legal-aid services: USAGov’s legal-help directory lists free and low-cost resources. Many have income or case-type limits; check those directly.
A dealer, warranty, or other consumer complaint: find your state consumer-protection office. Check which matters it handles and how to submit supporting records.
An insurer complaint: use the NAIC directory of state insurance departments to find the appropriate regulator.
